Don’t get rid of your noisy dryer

As technology progresses many things become easier to manufacture and therefore cheaper to make. While dryers aren’t cheap they are not as expensive as much more complex oven for example or a fridge. Due to its price dryers are easiest to replace but don’t run to your local appliance retailer if your dryer starts to make unusual noises. Most of the time noisy dryer is easy to fix and parts are not expensive and easily available. Here at Tricity Appliances our technicians carry a range of common parts for dryers to get them fixed quickly and properly.

Last couple of weeks our technicians visited few customers with noisy dryers. One customer complained of rattling noise while dryer was running. After little investigation technician determined that blower wheel was loose because it developed a crack. Blower wheel is a plastic wheel, most of the time driven by main motor or sometimes by its own motor on compact dryers. Due to heat inside the dryer plastic can become brittle and cracks becoming the source of rattling noise. Most of the time blower wheel is inexpensive and relatively easy to replace.

When it comes to Samsung and LG dryers design, they are very similar yet different. They do share common component however, support rollers. Support rollers, most of the time four or six, depending on the model, provide support for dryer drum and allow it to turn easily. Support rollers commonly become seized up causing drum to cut one side of the roller making it lopsided which can lead to thumping noise coming from the dryer. Once again the rollers are usually inexpensive and our technician carry a variety of rollers for different brands of dryers.

Leaky dishwasher

Dishwasher is an amazing thing, most people nowadays could not imagine their life without one. Dishwasher’s save us countless hours of washing dishes by hand every year all while saving water and environment at the same time. But with a machine that runs for a couple of hours while swooshing water around there’s a chance for something to go wrong and that something is water leaking. While most dishwasher leaks are small and do not cause major damage there is a possibility for a larger leak that could lead to property damage. At very first site of leaking do not hesitate to contact us at Tricity Appliances to make sure your leaky dishwasher is fixed properly and fast.

Our technicians work with almost all brands of dishwashers and today we will talk about select few and some common leaks and other problems. Whirlpool and Kitchen Aid dishwashers often leak through a part called diverter motor or to be exact through its shaft. Diverter motor turns a screen directing water between lower and upper spray arm. Diverter motor shaft inserts into the dishwasher from the bottom and has a rubber seal preventing leaks but can leak if seal is worn or hasn’t been installed properly after repair.

Older Kitchen Aid dishwashers sometimes start to leak through their fill assembly and reason is rather unusual. Fill assembly has two purposes, one to allow water to enter dishwasher and also act as went to allow hot steam to escape to prevent too much pressure build up inside dishwasher. When fill valve fails, it allows too much water too fast causing fill assembly to overfill and leak onto the floor, in this case fill valve needs to be replaced to solve the issue.

On a separate note, one of our technicians, after replacing faulty Bosch dishwasher fill valve found that dishwasher motor is not running although customer had no previous complaints. During diagnostic it was determined that dishwasher has heating error E1. Technician checked inline heater and motor for continuity and both checked out. It was then decided to replace control board due to faulty heating relay which prevented motor from running. Once board was replaced dishwasher ran with no issues.

Samsung dryer

We all really appreciate our appliances and cannot live without them, dishwasher is amazing and saves us time that we can spend with our families but one appliance that brings the most satisfaction is definitely the dryer, nothing beats getting into the bed with fresh and most importantly warm sheets. It’s a shame when dryer stops working or starts to make that annoying squeaky noise. At Tricity Appliances we carry many common parts for dryers to make sure it is repaired on the first visit.

Our technicians encounter all brands and types of appliances on their daily routes but one of the more common make and type is definitely Samsung dryers.

Like any other dryer, with age noises start to appear and the most common cause for noises are idler pulley and support rollers, these parts are usually inexpensive and relatively straight forward to replace.

Another issue that our technicians ran into in the last couple of weeks is complaint from the customer that Samsung dryer is not starting but makes humming noises. One of the causes for this could be clothing stuck inside blower wheel. Sometimes item stuck in the blower wheel can be removed by removing the lint filter but if stuck item is too far in, the front panel and blower housing will need to be removed. Another cause for dryer not starting and humming could be faulty motor. Good way to test whether it is the motor is to have someone start the dryer while holding the door switch in and turning the drum by hand. If the dryer starts and continues to run, motor is faulty.

Appliance repair

Samsung Ranges and Ovens

At Tricity Appliances we work with most major appliance manufacturers and have vast experience dealing with all sorts of appliance problems including the one we will talk about today, Samsung ranges and ovens.

First customer called in with complaint that Samsung oven is taking very long time to heat up. Once on site our technician talked to customer and found out some more details. Once oven eventually reaches preset temperature, oven seems to be working ok and food is cooked properly. To diagnose this problem technician pulled the oven out to access component hidden behind rear panel. With panel removed the first order of business is to check both bake, broil and convection element (if present) for continuity. With elements checked and deemed ok next component to check is oven temperature sensor. These sensors suppose to show certain resistance reading depending on ambient temperature, usually around 1080 ohms, this one checks out.

Most modern ovens are controlled by a control board that has series of relays that turn the elements on and off. After checking the control board on this particular unit it was deemed faulty and replaced with new part. Oven was tested with new part installed and reached desired temperature in half the time compared to before (around 10-13 min). Broil relay was faulty and prevented broil element to turn on to help preheat the oven.

Second customer called in with complaint that dual fuel Samsung range has no power to display but gas cooktop still works ok. Upon arriving to service call technician once again pulled range out to access components on the back of the unit. After all components were checked no faults or shorts was found. After reconnecting power to range power to display was restore but only to find display board with all light on and not responding. After another reset display went dark again and was deemed faulty. New part was ordered and awaiting arrival as part is special order. Customer was advised of possible delays with shipping but agreed to proceed with order.

Usual symptoms, unusual problems

Here at Tricity Appliances we have an extensive experience with all sorts of appliance problems but until today we run into problems we have not seen before. Today we’ll talk about couple of cases that were not what they seemed at first.

A customer called in with a complain that the dryer is very noisy when running as if there is a coin stuck somewhere inside, customer also states that dryer seems to be getting too hot. When our technician arrived on site dryer was not used since previous day. Dryer was started and allowed to run for 10 min. No unusual noses were heard until about 10-15 minutes into the cycle. Once noise appeared technician decided to disassemble the dryer to check moving part for wear to determine the source of the noise. Once apart dryer components such as rollers and pulley as well as motor were checked for signs of failure of wear, none were found. After assembly dryer was tested again with the noise re appearing and drum becoming extremely hot. Technician then checked heating element for shorts to ground and determined that element is in fact shorted to ground causing element to stay on longer that necessary in turn causing components to become too hot creating drone effect through dryer cabinet.

This other customer called in with a problem with their Hisense refrigerator. Customer stated that fresh food section of the refrigerator is too warm but freezer is ok and also display showing E4 error code. This error message has to do with evaporator fan not running which would explain refrigerator section being too warm. When technician arrived on site freezer compartment was taken apart to access evaporator fan. After checking the fan it was determined to be ok. Taking a closer look, technician found that connectors on the fan as well as thermistor were corroded. After repairing the connectors all functions were restored.

ice maker

Ice-makers, the good, the bad and the ugly

As hot summer weather finally approaching, we are all looking forward to gather with friends and family for a nice back yard BBQ and what comes with BBQ? Correct – drinks! And what do drinks need? Ice! A lot of ice! Most modern fridges these days come with either and option for an ice maker and ice dispenser or come prewired for one, ready to install. But where is extra part, there’s an extra possibility of failure and today I would like to tell you about some of most common ice maker faults.

Most ice makers regardless of the brand are very similar in design and operation principle. Every ice maker has ice mold, motor, thermostat or sensor, arm and heater. One of the most common failures is problem with the ice maker motor. While motor itself can fail, also the contact inside the ice maker can burn out preventing it from functioning properly. Another common fault is ice maker not filling with water. There are number of reasons why ice maker is not filling with water. Above mentioned problem with contacts is one of them. Also water inlet valve is part of ice maker system and if faulty will prevent ice maker from filling and making ice. At Tricity Appliances our technicians carry a range of common components and parts in their truck stock to repair or replace your ice maker on first visit most of the time.

Some of the less common failures of ice makers are mechanical issues and user mistakes. Since ice make is most commonly located in the freezer, too much food in the freezer can cause ice maker arm to be stuck in “on” position making ice maker produce ice even after the ice bucket is full resulting in ice spilled in freezer sometimes preventing freezer door from opening or closing correctly. Too much product in the freezer can also push against the ice maker causing mechanical damage to its components such as arm or fill spout leading to improper operation or leakage.

If you are experiencing this issue with ice maker in your fridge or any other appliance problem, do not hesitate to contact Tricity Appliances Quality Service and we will be glad to set up an appointment to repair your appliance as soon as possible.

Samsung washer and dryer, not so common issues

Samsung washer and dryer, not so common issues

It only takes a quick search on the internet to find common issues with any given appliance. But today we would like to talk about less known problems with Samsung washers and dryers that our technicians ran into over the years.

Few month back a customer called in with the complaint that their Samsung dryer start running as soon as the door is closed but no heat is present. When our technician arrived on site, it was determined that dryer in fact starts running as soon as the door is shut but control panel is not lit up. While door is closed dryer control panel can be turned on and cycle started at this point heating starting to work indicating proper operation of heating element. After removing top cover to access the control board it was determined that motor relay on the board is stuck closed causing the motor to run as soon as door is closed. Few days later the part was replaced and dryer returned to its proper working order.

Another time our technician were called for a Samsung washing machine that according to customer does not finish cycle and stuck on 7 minute mark not spinning the clothes dry. Upon arrival to customer’s home our technicians performed diagnostic of the washer to determine if any error messages were saved in the memory. Code 3E was saved. 3E error on Samsung washing machine means that motor is not able to rotate the drum freely. First thing to check in this situation is wiring connection to rotor position sensor on the back of the washer. Often times with heavy loads the drum of the washer can “jump” causing stress on wiring harness causing the wires to get loose or break. If you are experiencing this issue with your Samsung washer most likely the main wiring harness will need to be replaced.

Whirlpool and Maytag compact washers

Through out last decade local builders and homeowners installed a lot of  Whirlpool and Maytag compact washing machines in their houses and apartments. In the last few weeks our technicians ran into a few of those machines with some interesting problems.

First washing machine that our technician was working on had fairly common problem, error ‘“A10” showing on display and water not draining. First thing to check is coin trap as clothes item can often make their way to drain pump and block the impeller. After draining water by hand and opening the coin trap it became obvious that drain pump is clear but instead the tub hose that goes from the tub to drain pump was clogged with clothing item. Due to design, small clothing items such as underwear and socks can be sucked into this hose preventing washer from draining. In order to access this hose, the front panel of the machine needs to be removed. At Tricity Appliances Quality Service we have vast experience with this type of repair and other issues with this type of washing machine. If you having trouble with your compact Maytag or Whirlpool washer please do not hesitate to contact us to schedule service appointment.

Another common complaint is washer not spinning properly or not spinning fast enough leaving clothes wet after cycle is complete. Usually the problem lays within the motor. The motor on these machines uses carbon brushes to deliver current to motor rotor. Over the years of use carbon brushes wear out and no longer provide proper current preventing the motor from picking up high speed. Carbon brushes are relatively cheap to replace and are usually in truck stock with our technicians. Sometimes same problem is caused by motor itself as it has a tachometer built in. If this part malfunctions the motor needs to be replaced as tachometer is not a serviceable part.

Bosch dishwasher not filling with water

This week our technicians ran into unusually large amount of Bosch dishwasher repairs. While we usually recommend Bosch dishwashers even best brands have occasional issues.

On one of the calls that we received customer complained that dishwasher is not taking in water. When the technician arrived, customer advised in more details that dishwasher was set for regular cycle but 2 hours later was still showing 1 minute remaining. During inspection it was determined that dishwasher starts to drain as soon as turned on. After pulling out dishwasher half way and checking water inlet valve it was found leaking causing water accumulating in dishwasher base triggering float switch and emergency drain. At Tricity Appliances we try to carry most common parts in our truck stock to make sure most repairs are completed on first visit. After clearing the water from dishwasher base new water inlet valve was installed and dishwasher tested to insure proper operation and no leaks. Unfortunately water inlet valves appear to be a weak spot on Bosch dishwasher however replacement parts are inexpensive and usually easily available.
